A Plan...what is that?

After injury it is common to think “how will I ever return to full fitness and/or play the sport/activity I love again?”

One of the most important aspects of returning to full fitness and function after injury is to work out a plan of attack.  This can be established during your initial assessment at OPSMC once we have information about your injury, your goals and previous level of function determined.

The plan has certain phases to work through, enabling us to return you to your pre-injury level of strength, fitness and function and ideally then make you even  better than before.

From your initial consultation at OPMSC our practitioners are thinking abut the stages and boxes that need to be ticked off so that you can return to your activity in the quickest and safest way possible while minimising the risk of injury recurrence.

A plan may consist of:

Initial first aid (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and protection)
Initial assessment (history, physical examination, investigations ….)
Cross training to maintain or regain Cardiovascular fitness levels
Return to normal activities of daily living
Regain normal strength and power
Sport specific training to return to previous level of activities / sport

Rather than just using time to determine return to play times, it is essential that we tick off key boxes before progressing to the next stage, e.g. walking before running and training before playing. It is important that the plan remains fluid so that adjustments can be made throughout the rehabilitation process, as at times the process can be a bit up and down, as seen in the graphs below.

At OPMSC we have a strong emphasis on providing thorough and quality care for all and use a multidisciplinary approach to help you return to normal function and activity as soon and as safely as possible.
