Rip Curl Gromsearch champions crowned at Torquay Point

Torquay, VIC/AUS (Monday 24th September, 2018): Champions have been crowned for the opening event of the Rip Curl Gromsearch series today at Torquay Point on Victoria’s Surf Coast.
With wind-swept 3-4ft waves on offer at the backup location of Torquay Point, competitors were challenged in the slopey right handers and shifty lineup.
George Pittar (Manly, NSW), excelled in the long point break and was one of the stand out surfers across the day on his way to the 16 & Under Boys title.
Stringing together one of the highest heat total of the day (16.70), Pittar was ruthless in the final utilizing his full bag of tricks to take the victory.
“I’m so stoked to win the final” said Pittar.
“I have been struggling at events this year so im really happy to win.”
“It’s such a big playing field out at Torquay Point with heaps of water moving so I was lucky to get some good waves and build my confidence for the rest of the year.”
Local surfer Indi White (Jan Juc, VIC) placed in second position with an excellent heat total of 16.17 however fell just short of the required total to win.
Placing in third was Fin McLaren (Austinmer, NSW) with Luke Vidler (Coolangatta, QLD) in fourth.
The 16 & Under Girls final saw some incredible surfing from Molly Picklum (Shelly Beach, NSW) who locked in a 9.33 and 6.00 wave scores to claim top spot.
“This is my first time in Victoria and it was so much fun” said Picklum.
“The water is absolutely freezing but the waves are awesome! I’m looking forward to heading to the next event and hopefully keep the roll going.”
Finishing in second was Nyxie Ryan (Lennox Head, NSW), with Kyla Whitfield (Narrabeen, NSW) in third and Elle Clayton-Brown (Corlette, NSW) in fourth.
Other divisional winners across the day included Marlon Harrison (14 & Under Boys, Coolangatta QLD), Mia Huppatz (14 & Under Girls, Jan Juc VIC), Quincy Symonds (12 & Under Girls, Tweed Heads NSW) and Isaak Brown (12 & Under Boys, Lake Munmorah NSW).
The Outstanding Performers of the Weekend went to Touma Cameron, Indi White and Ellie Harrison. The Rising Star award was awarded to Isla Huppatz and Mannix Squires.
The Judges Choice award went to Riley Munro and Elle Clayton-Brown.

About the Rip Curl Gromsearch:
The prominent event series gives 16-and-under surfers a chance to compete against their nations’ best, and 2018 marks its 20th year running. One of the longest Junior Surfing Series in the world, it has become a crucial stepping-stone in the development of junior surfers.
The list of previous GromSearch winners illustrates the significant history of the series, with World Surf League (WSL) competitors Gabriel Medina (Brazil), Tyler Wright (Australia), Owen Wright (Australia), Matt Wilkinson (Australia), Jordy Smith (South Africa), Kolohe Andino (USA) and Sally Fitzgibbons (Australia) among the list of former competitors and GromSearch International Final Champions.
After the five event series, the top 10 ranked surfers in each divisions qualify for the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final, where athletes compete for the chance to become the Australian GromSearch Champion.
The National Champion will then represent Australia against the best junior surfers from around the world at the Rip Curl GromSearch International Final, held at a new International location  each year.
