Coaching

Surfing Victoria delivers Level 1 and 2 Surf riding Coach Accreditation Course as part of the Australian Sports Commission’s National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS). These courses cover the necessary theory components of the NCAS and the sports specific practical requirements of Surfing Australia.Participants are invited to attend the course and then be required to complete the necessary theory and practical elements before becoming accredited. NCAS approved courses are recognized nationally and by some international affiliates of Surfing Australia’s Licensed Surf school Network.
 

Level 1 Surf riding Coach Accreditation Course requisites:

Simply attending the level 1 course and passing the exam does not entitle you to the qualification. In order for you to be a fully qualified coach there are a number of requirements that must be completed in addition to the two-day course.The following documents must be completed and returned to Surfing Victoria:

  • Completed Level 1 Surf Coaching Workbook including; Surfing Australia Coach Information Card, Coaches Code of Ethics Agreement Form, Level 1 Surf Coaching Diary & Lesson Plans, Level 1 Course Exam (completed during 2 day course).
  • Letter of recognition for 20 hours coaching undertaken in a Surfing Australia Surfschool
  • A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state
  • An apply first aid or provide first aid certificate  - HTLAID003 or equivilant 
  • A current Ocean Rescue Award (one of the below
         • Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
         • Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
         • Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society
         • OSSCA - Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association

 Please note that until these requirements have been completed, the National Coaching Council cannot accredit you as a Level 1 Coach.

Course Cost: $385.00

Level 2 Surf riding Coach Accreditation Course requisites: Pre-requisites

  • Hold a Surfing Australia Level 1 coach accreditation for 24 months
  • Be fit and able to participate in Level 2 course activities and practical surf tests
  • Be at least 20 years of age

To become accredited you will need to:

  • Do the 2 day course
  • A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state
  • An apply first aid or provide first aid certificate HTLAID003 or equivilant 
  • A current Ocean Rescue Award (one of the below
         • Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
         • Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
         • Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society
         • OSSCA - Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association

 Post Course

  • Plan and implement 40 hours of coaching for a group of surfers and document this training in an assignment booklet
  • Undertake an online coaching competencies course.

PADDLEBOARDING (SUP) COACHING COURSE

The Surfing Australia SUP Flat Water Coaching Course is the minimum qualification required to coach Stand Up Paddleboarding in an enclosed flat water environment.

To obtain this accreditation an individual must adhere to the following requirements:
1. Full attendance at the course
2. 20 practical SUP flat water coaching experience (after completing the course)
3. Pass a basic SUP skills assessment
4. A current Surfing Australia membership
5. A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state
6. An apply first aid or provide first aid certificate  - HTLAID003 or equivilant 
7. A current Ocean Rescue Award (one of the below)
• Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
• Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
• Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society
• OSSCA Award Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association

Cost: $385 (including GST)


SUP SURF and/or SUP OPEN WATER MODULES

The objective of the SUP Open water and SUP Surf Modules is to up-skill the accredited Flat Water SUP Coach with the competencies to develop skills in a preferred SUP lesson environment.

1. Hold a current flat water SUP accreditation
2. Full attendance at the course
3. 10 practical SUP flat water coaching experience (after completing the course)
4. Pass a basic SUP skills assessment 
5. A current Surfing Australia membership
6. A current ‘Working With Children' check for the relevant state 
7. An apply first aid or provide first aid certificate  - HTLAID003 or equivilant 
• A current Ocean Rescue Award (one of the below)
• Bronze proficiency: Surf Life Saving Association
• Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community Award
• Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society
• OSSCA Award Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association

On completion of these requirements your Surfing Australia SUP SURF or OPEN WATER Coaching accreditation will be endorsed and a new coaching card will be issued.
