The International Judging and Officiating Accreditation Course

Surfing Australia Judging development courses are recognised as the only endorsed Judging Accreditation course by the Australian Sports Commission and the International Surfing Association.

The International Judging and Officiating accreditation courses are regularly being conducted in many major surfing areas around our coast line and in conjunction with our state branches.

The International Judging and Officiating Course is the first step in becoming a professional surfing Judge and Official. Surfing Australia are committed to providing a clear development pathway for our aspiring and, dedicated experienced officials.

The cost of The International Judging and Officiating course is $190 per person. The course takes approximately 7 hours with participants receiving: The International Judging manual, current rule book, ID accreditation card and informative judging DVD.

Course participants are accredited on the day of the course as a “Level 1 club Judge”

A higher level accreditation pre-requisite is that course participants must complete 20 hours of judging experience, 10 hours at a club level and 10 hours at a regional/state level. The hours must be documented and signed off by a Surfing Australia accredited Head Judge and a club President.

The Australian Judging register

Surfing Australia manages a database of Australian registered and accredited judges and officials.

This register will be accessed by state branches in 2010 to establish current registered officials for judging opportunities at sanctioned events.

In December, all judges that have completed The International Judging and Officiating Course are required to re-register to maintain accreditation. All accredited and registered event judges and officials are covered under Surfing Australia’s Professional Indemnity insurance.

There are currently three (3) registration levels available for Australian Judges and Officials.

  • Level 1 Club Judge (No hours of experience needed)
  • Level 2 State Judge
  • Level 3 International Judge

The International Judging register and exchange program

Surfing Australia manages the International judging register and exchange program on behalf of the ISA.

Surfing Australia utilises the International registered judges’ data base to establish current International registered judges for use at National and International events and the judging exchange program with other licensed countries.

All Australian Judges that are registered as Level 3 International Judges are eligible for the International exchange program between licensed countries.

There are currently 18 licensed countries who are members of the exchange program.
