ANTICIPATION BUILDS BEFORE THE OPENING EVENT OF THE 2019 WOOLWORTHS WA JUNIOR TITLES
Close to 100 of Western Australia’s best junior surfers are preparing to converge on the wave-rich Margaret River region this weekend for the opening event of the 2019 Woolworths WA Junior Surfing Titles presented by SunSmart.
Grommets from 8 through to 17 years of age will unite from all corners of the state for the first of three events which will determine who will represent WA at the Surf Dive 'n Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles to be held in Western Australia later this year.
Many of WA’s top surfers cut their teeth competing at the Junior Titles as grommets, with Taj Burrow (Yallingup), Yadin Nicol (Cowaramup), Ry Craike (Kalbarri), Creed McTaggart (Margaret River), Jack Robinson (Margaret River), Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup), Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) and Bronte Macaulay (Gracetown), all captured prestigious State Championships in the past.
Surfers from as far south as Albany and as far north as Carnarvon will take on the famed swells of Surfers Point, with South-West locals out to make the most of the home ground advantage this weekend.
Leading the local charge in the blue ribbon Under-18 Boys division will be Jed Gradisen (Gracetown). Hot off recent success at Taj’s Small Fries earlier this year, Gradisen’s surfing is perfectly suited to the waves around Margaret River.
Finn Cox (Margaret River) and Seth Van Haeften (Margaret River) will also others to keep an eye on as they compete on home soil.
Reigning Under-18 Girls State Champion Emma Cattlin (Yallingup), will headline an impressive field of females attending the event including Coral Durant (Red Bluff), Maddie Cawood (Margaret River) and Arabelle Gibson (Margaret River).
Woolworths are committed to encouraging healthy eating habits amongst Aussie kids and gave away over 25 million pieces of free fruit last year as part of their free fruit for kids program.
“It’s shaping up to be a great weekend of surfing,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “The Woolworths WA Junior Surfing Titles are the launch pad for our next generation of aspiring surfing champions to reach bigger and better things.”
Favourable surf is forecast for this weekend with the iconic Surfers Point set to play host to an excited bunch of frothing grommets. Action is set to commence at 7:30am on Saturday.
