BIG SCORES & BLISTERING PERFORMANCES ON DAY 2 OF THE RIP CURL GROMSEARCH IN WEST OZ
An overnight southerly change provided an increase in swell and surprisingly good conditions for day # 2 of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre.
Competitors from right across WA and all corners of Australia raised the performance bar at the third stop of the prestigious National series. The blue-ribbon 16 & under boys and girls divisions kicked off proceedings and set the punchy 2-3 feet waves at Trigg Beach alight, with some amazing surfing highlighting their round one heats.
Aidan Lewnard-Parsons (Ulladulla, NSW), Finn Cox (Margaret River, WA), Cole Fox (Torquay, VIC), Lachie Mitchell-D’Raine (Duncriag, WA), and Darcy Piltz (Budgewoi Peninsula, NSW) all impressed on their way to comfortable round one victory’s.
Current Under-16 National champion, Xavier Huxtable (Torquay, VIC) proved he’s truly a star on the rise, posting the highest two-wave combined total of the day, 18.13 (from a possible 20).
Huxtable, who recently represented Australia at the ISA World Junior Championships in Japan, sent an ominous sign to his fellow competitors blowing up to score a near perfect 9.30 (from a possible 10) and backed it up with an 8.83 (from a possible 10)
“This is my first time surfing in Perth, I’ve been to WA before but never surfed at Trigg ,” said Huxtable. “It’s good to have some more swell today, the waves have been pretty fun, they’ve got a lot more punch and break a lot closer to the beach than back at Jan Juc.”
Carrying on from where the boys left off, the 16 & under girls division also made light work of the conditions at Trigg Beach today.
April McPherson (Mandurah, WA), Maddie Cawood (Margaret River, WA), Holly Minter (Albany, WA), and Emma Cattlin (Yallingup, WA) all won their round one heats and progressed through to tomorrow’s semi finals in style.
They’ll meet Bodhi Leigh-Jones (Whale Beach, NSW), Sascha Roberts (Albany, WA), Sophie Butcher (Geraldton, WA), and Evie Dupuy (Albany, WA) also qualified for tomorrow’s semi finals.
Arguably the best heats of the day were the quarterfinals of the 14 & under Boys. Logan Steinwede (Wagstaff, NSW), Ethan Huxtable (Torquay, VIC), Jack Mickle (Trigg Beach, WA), Max Burton (Torquay, VIC), and George Simpson (Gracetown, WA), went berserk with hopes of making it through to tomorrow’s finals.
The standout performer in the 14 & under boys was Benny Wilson (Narrabeen, NSW), who was in scintillating form. Wilson found himself on some of the best waves of the day, scoring a 9.17 (from a possible 10) and an 8.57 (from a possible 10), posting a combined heat total of 17.74 (from a possible 20).
“I’ve been coming to WA for the GromSearch for the past couple of years and I’m stoked to have found a couple of good ones out there today,” said Wilson. “I haven’t had a keeper result thus far in the series, so I’m stoked to make it to the semi’s.”
Despite the overcast and chilly on beach conditions, plenty of excited grommets hung around Trigg Beach all day taking part in Rip Curl beach games and the Flight Centre Expression Session.
The swell is forecast to hang around for tomorrow’s finals, with light early morning conditions set to greet competitors with heats commencing at 8am.
