Western Australia’s most successful professional surfer, Taj Burrow (Yallingup) has confirmed his position in Perth's premiere surf tournament, with the Corsaire Aviation King of the Point presented by the City of Stirling set to touch down at Trigg Point this weekend.
Surfing has a rich history along the metropolitan beaches, with the waves off Trigg Point launching the careers of many of WA’s very best surfers over the years.
The King of the Point first ran at Trigg back in 1979 and boasts an impressive honour roll of past winners including Mike McAuliffe (Margaret River), Dave Macaulay (Gracetown), Jake Paterson (Yallingup), Luke Campbell (Margaret River), Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup) and Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) to name a few.
Burrow, a 19 year veteran on the World Championship Tour retired three years ago and will join a host of WA’s best surfers who will battle it out for $10k in cash and prizes.
“I remember the King of the Point growing up as a grom, it’s a longstanding WA event that’s been running for decades,” said Burrow. “I don’t think I’ve ever surfed at Trigg, but I’m excited to get up and have some fun.”
Other surfers keen to climb upon the throne and claim the crown this weekend include; reigning King of the Point champion, Jano Belo (Melville), 2018 State Champion Jack Haslau (Margaret River) as well as Jay Davies (Yallingup), Dino Adrian (Margaret River), Luke Campbell (Margaret River) and Cy Cox (Margaret River),
Local hopes lay with metro-based surfers Moses Le Grice (East Fremantle), Alex McGuffin (Bicton), Mitch Taylor (North Beach), Fletcher Llanwarne (Sorrento) and Jake Molloy (Yokine).
“I’m really excited to see my close mates Jay (Davies) and Dino (Adrian) throw on a singlet and surf a heat as it’s very, very for those guys,” said Burrow. “We’re all in it to win it.”
An impressive group of young ladies will also be out to get their hands on the crown in the Queen of the Point division. Coral Durant (Carnarvon), and Emma Cattlin (Yallingup) are amongst the strong field of surfers taking part this weekend.
Surfing WA is thrilled to again be partnering with Corsaire Aviation for this iconic cult event.
“Corsaire is proud to once again be supporting King of the Point,” said company founder Luke Wyllie. “This is the third year we’ve supported this event, we love working with Surfing WA and being part of the community lifestyle that this event represents.”
City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said he’s excited to see the premiere surfing event returning to the City’s shores.
“This competition attracts some of the State’s best surfers and is always really hotly contested so I hope the community can get behind it and head down and support our local surfers, at a local event,” Mayor Irwin said.
“We are really proud to be able to support events like King of the Point; not only does it showcase just how talented our local surfers are, it showcases just how amazing the City’s coastline is as well.”

Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks is looking forward to rolling out the biggest and best surfing event on the metropolitan beaches.
“We're super excited to be hosting this prestigious event on Perth's best surfing beach,” said Majeks. “Thanks to the support of our key partners Corsaire and the City of Stirling, we're able to promote the rich history of this event and the future stars of the sport.”
