Some of Australia’s best junior suffers ripped into windswept conditions in WA, as the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre continued today at Scarborough Beach.
The blue ribbon 16 & Under Boys and Girls divisions hit the water first up and made the most of the light early morning winds to post some big numbers.
Margaret River’s Finn Cox was the best performing surfer of the day, taking to the air on multiple occasions and surfing with speed and aggression, belting any sections he could find.
Cox completed one tail-high aerial reverse to claim the highest score of the day with a near perfect 9.77 (from a possible 10). He then backed it up with an excellent 8.00 to finish on a combined two-wave total of 17.77 (from a possible 20).
“The waves were small and punchy, but there’s some good ramps on the right ones,” said Cox. “You’re always stoked when you get scores high into the 9’s.”
Rip Curl team rider and one of WA’s best competitive surfers, Jacob Willcox (Margaret River, WA), was on hand to encourage and the new generation of GromSearch competitors. Willcox called a few heats and helped judge the Flight Centre Expression Session.
As a former Rip Curl GromSearch Series winner, Willocx has fond memories of competing in the specialty junior event growing up.

“I loved the GromSearch events when I was growing up and I was lucky enough to make the GromSearch International Final in pumping waves at Lakey Peak once as well which I'll always remember," said Willcox. “Its so cool that 2018 marks the GromSearch's 20th anniversary. Its one of the longest junior surfing series on the world and definitely had a big impact on me as a grom.”
Clean conditions are forecast for finals day with competition resuming from 7:30am and finals kicking off around lunch time.
The list of previous GromSearch winners illustrates the significant history of the series, with World Surf League (WSL) competitors Gabriel Medina (Brazil), Tyler Wright (Australia), Owen Wright (Australia), Matt Wilkinson (Australia), Jordy Smith (South Africa), Kolohe Andino (USA) and Sally Fitzgibbons (Australia) among the list of former competitors and GromSearch International Final Champions.
After the last event in Queensland, the top-ranked surfers qualify for the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final (in their respective divisions), where they then compete for the chance to become the Australian GromSearch Champion. The National Champion then represents Australia at the Rip Curl GromSearch International Final, held at a new location around the globe each year, against the best junior surfers in each participating country.
