SURFING WESTERN AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCES 2018 EVENTS SCHEDULE
Surfing Western Australia is excited to announce our 2018 events schedule.
Over 30 state, specialty, national and international events will be held throughout WA’s major surfing regions. The competition season will commence with the 13th annual Taj’s Small Fries kicking off in Yallingup on the 19th – 21st January.
Cornerstone events on the 2018 calendar include; The WSL Margaret River Pro, Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic, The King of the Point, The 21st annual Whalebone Classic as well as a suite of events catering for shortboarders, longboarders, bodyboarders and stand up paddleboarders (SUP).
Surfing WA successfully trialled a new competition format in 2017, with the introduction of a double elimination three-day event structure.
Surfing WA has recently encouraged feedback from key stakeholders and competitors in relation to the three-day format and event locations:
73% of respondents were satisfied or highly satisfied with the three-day format.
72% of respondents were satisfied or highly satisfied with their event locations.
80% of respondents would like to see the introduction of a priority system.
80% of respondents were happy with the timing of the events series.
12% of respondents found the three-day format problematic or limited their opportunity.
We have taken the findings and feedback on board when setting our calendar dates and competition venues.
Next years HIF Pro Am Series, SunSmart Bodyboard Titles, HIF Longboard Titles and Stand Up Surf Shop SUP Titles will remain as two rounds held over a three-day period.
Surfing WA strives to ensure all our events are held at quality locations at premium times of the year, whilst providing a balanced mix of events held throughout the state.
“We’re continually looking to improve our WA State Titles across all codes and strongly believe that the format we introduced in 2017 has been well received,” said Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks. “We’re excited to work towards delivering better events and greater on beach experiences for all our competitive members and the wider surfing community. As well as live scoring at all events in 2018 we’ll introduce a 4-man priority system for the first time ever.”
