TRICKY TRIGG MAKES THE GOING TOUGH ON DAY ONE OF THE WOOLWORTHS SURFER GROMS COMPS
Strong winds and small swells couldn't reduce the enthusiasm of some of Australia's best micro-groms as the ninth event of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps presented by Wahu commenced in tricky and wind swept conditions at Trigg Point, Western Australia.
Non-elimination round one heats highlighted a marathon opening day of competition, with close to 90 young competitors having a ‘gromtastic’ time along Perth’s metropolitan coastline. WA's freshest batch of young surfing talent brought the ocean to boiling point with some impressive performances across all seven divisions that hit the water.
With an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC) on the line, the blue ribbon Under-14 Boys division kicked off proceedings this morning and set a high standard for all others to follow.
Jake Hagan (Geraldton), Danny Benedetti (Margaret River), Dexter Payenberg (Fremantle), Jack Mickle (Trigg), Jay Robinson (Dunsborough), Dylan Vernon (Dunsborough) and Jack Mitchell (Margaret River) all dominated their heats, rocketing to the top of the event leaderboard after round one.
The Under-14 Girls division was also an eye-catching affair, with Zali Hewson (Margaret River) leading the way, followed closely by Lilli Cox (Margaret River), Milla Clifford (Margaret River) and Summer Sunderland (Margaret River).
A strengthening afternoon sea breeze couldn’t stop the Under-12’s, Under-10’s and Under-8's divisions from strutting their stuff, with the micro-groms battling through tough afternoon conditions tremendously.
“Despite the conditions we have seen so many groms going mad out there today,” said Surfing WA Coach and Commentator, Mark Clift. “The leaderboard keeps things really dynamic with something on the line in each and every heat that hits the water.”
There will be plenty more amazing surfing, fun, shenanigans, and beach games on offer for the groms and parents alike tomorrow when competition resumes from 7:30am with improved surf conditions forecast for finals day at Trigg Point.
Adding to the excitement on offer over the weekend is the Woolworths Fresh Wave Awards, presented to the best and fairest male and female surfers from each event. The recipients will have a high degree of sportsmanship and exhibit future surfing potential and will be awarded a $250 Woolworths voucher each.
The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps presented by Wahu have helped to launch the careers of many of Australia's most promising junior surfers with almost 800 children set to take part in the 2017/18 event series.
Previous champions include Matt Banting, Jacob Willcox, Luke Hynd, Eli Steele, Kai Hing, Chris Zaffis, Quinn Bruce, Ellie-Jean Coffey, Macy Callaghan, Isabella Nichols, Holly Wawn and Laura Poncini.
