WA'S BEST SURFING SCHOOLS CONVERGE FOR THE SUNSMART WA SCHOOL SURFING TITLES STATE FINAL
The best surfing schools from across Western Australia are set to take over Trigg Beach tomorrow for the State Final of the 2017 SunSmart WA School Surfing Titles.
After an exciting two weeks of qualifying events held right across WA, a total of 27 regional and metropolitan high schools from Geraldton in the North to Esperance in the South are set to converge on the metropolitan beaches to decide who will be crowned WA’s Champion Surfing School for 2017.
Arguably Surfing WA’s largest participation based event of the year, the SunSmart School Surfing Titles has seen over 50 WA high schools nominate over 300 teams of surfers and bodyboarders, with hundreds of students taking part leading into Friday's finale.
The SunSmart School Surfing Titles provides a unique stepping stone for surfers to reach the pinnacle of the sport for their age group. For surfers, a win on at Trigg on Friday will see them qualify as part of the WA Junior Surfing Team and compete at the Surf Dive 'N Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles which is set to be held in Culburra Beach, NSW in November.
"The SunSmart School Surfing Titles epitomises Western Australia's junior development and competition pathway," said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. "It's amazing that students can reach the highest level of competition on offer in Australia after first completing learn to surf courses through their school, competing at regional and metro qualifying events, then moving onto our State Final, with the National Junior Titles awaiting our winners."
Competition is set to be fierce as Margaret River Senior High School eyes off a record 12th consecutive Champion School Title.
Margaret River's surf-academy boasts a swag of highly accomplished surfers including; Under-18 State Champions Jack Haslau and Emma Cattlin, as well swag of up and coming talent including; Ben Gradisen, Jamaica Selby, Seth Van Haeften and Finn Cox.
Margaret River is set to face some stiff opposition from the best regional and metropolitan high school teams who have performed exceptionally in the qualifying rounds over the past two weeks.
Strong regional teams making the trip to Perth to challenge Margaret River SHS include; Bunbury SHS, Comet Bay College, Albany SHS and Mandurah Catholic College.
While metropolitan schools set to impress on home soil include; CBC Fremantle, Christchurch Grammar School, Scotch College, Prendiville Catholic College and St Mary's Anglican Girls School, who will all be out to do their best to topple some quality competition.
Over 120 competitors are set to tackle some perfect winter surf conditions, with a sunny skies, clean offshore winds and great sandbanks along Trigg Beach set to greet competitors on Friday.
"It's been a testing couple of weeks running qualifying events right across WA in some wet and wild conditions," said Majeks. "I'm happy that we can guarantee there will be some great waves and conditions on offer for our state finalists."
Round one heats are set to kick off at 8am sharp and finals and event presentations to wrap up by 3pm.

We cannot feel ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and yet it is the major cause of skin cancer. Your skin remembers all the UV exposure you get. It all adds up and increases your long-term risk of skin cancer. It’s estimated that if we reduce our lifetime exposure to UV radiation by just 20%, Australia would have about one-third fewer cases of skin cancer. Download the SunSmart app at www.myuv.com.au to check the UV where you are at any time. The UV Index will tell you when the uv radiation is doing you harm. It tells you when to cover up and when you don’t need to bother.
Remember UV3 is the key! At UV3+, cover up. Slip. Slop. Slap. Seek. Slide
